She veered off the traditional path of an Azerbaijani woman, began crafting tricky quiz questions, and started guiding tours around Kaunas all while driving the SPEAK Lithuania initiative forward. Who is she, you ask? The correct answer: Narmin Aliyeva – a young woman who came to Lithuania a decade ago to study and quickly became a prominent face in Kaunas’ international community, writes Kaunas Full of Culture.

When Maria Rosa Rojas Noguera from Venezuela decided to continue her education and study for a master’s degree, she had her heart set on Australia. Still, she unexpectedly found herself thriving in the green landscapes of Lithuania. “I didn’t choose Kaunas. In a sense, I’d say Kaunas chose me,” says Maria. Her journey has been inspiring, from volunteering and teaching in Venezuela to celebrating Užgavėnės and studying in Lithuania. Today Maria encourages others not to give up and dedicates her time to science that solves real-world challenges.

“I am someone who uses any opportunity that comes my way and believes that participation is more important than the fear of losing,” says Tameem Ansari M from Chennai, India. A KTU informatics student has already developed a prize-winning innovation and is heading towards the end of his bachelor’s at the same time working in a local company as an AI specialist. He calls Kaunas his home away from home.

When Fallon Clare Manhanga arrived in Lithuania in 2016 to pursue her bachelor’s degree at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), she planned to return to Zimbabwe after graduation. However, life had its own way of unfolding. “Sometimes we plan, but God has different ideas,” she says with a smile. Years later, Fallon is still in Lithuania, working towards her PhD.

Studying abroad provides a unique opportunity for academic growth and cultural exploration but despite the excitement, transitioning and leaving home can still be overwhelming. “Preparing thoroughly before your arrival can make all the difference,” says Audronė Račkauskienė, a Head of the International Studies Office at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

Aysu Ismayilova’s bold decision to leave a prestigious university in Baku for Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) was a turning point in her life. Despite initial skepticism from those around her, Aysu’s choice to pursue a Materials Physics and Nanotechnology degree at KTU has led to remarkable global opportunities, including an exchange in South Korea and an internship in Portugal.

It is no secret – students who are actively involved in a variety of activities during their studies are successful. One of them is a recent Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) alumnus Azad Ismayilov from Azerbaijan. Over the past six years, he not only contributed to the name of KTU with his research and studies but also enhanced the university’s reputation through his activities and volunteering. Now, Azad has a successful career in Lithuania and a few more dreams on his mind – one being PhD studies.

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is one of ten Lithuanian universities participating in the UPinLT programme designed to help international students get paid internships in Lithuania and successfully integrate into the Lithuanian job market.

Eylül Güleryüz’s passion for technology and creativity brought her from Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, to almost 34 times smaller Kaunas, Lithuania. She got her bachelor’s from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and plans to continue her education here. “I study Informatics, or should I say, studied?” says Eylül with a smile.

In the newest QS European university rankings, KTU has risen from the 275th position to the 256th.

“While studying at KTU, I became more and more interested in innovations that are being developed under the topic of climate action,” says Elessar Mhana, a fresh-out-of-KTU graduate of Chemical Technology and Engineering from Syria.

Every year more than 300 students from different countries of the world come to study at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). While for some, the choice to study at home seems natural, for Johannes Coetsee, it felt too safe and lacked adventure. “I saw generations before me just study, get a job and never move even one town away. Today, we’re very blessed with how connected the world is, so I wanted to take advantage and study internationally,” says Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) graduate.

In the recently published QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2025, Kaunas was listed as one of the best cities to study.

“It fascinates me how we, civil engineers, can transform seemingly impossible ideas of architects into reality,” says Ivan Ramirez Triana, a fresh-out-of-KTU graduate from Colombia. Being only 16, he travelled more than 10 thousand kilometres from Bogota to Kaunas to pursue studies at Kaunas University of Technology.

Darshan Puttaswamy from Bangalore, India, who has graduated with a master’s in industrial engineering and management at KTU, proposed a business solution for producing linen fabric – he suggests blending flax and hemp fibres to increase longevity and reduce production costs.

The results of the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025, one of the world’s leading international university rankings, were announced today. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has improved its ranking by more than 50 positions and is now ranked among the top 751–760 higher education institutions worldwide.

Most people can no longer imagine everyday life without communicating by email, searching for information, or ordering goods online. Safiyya Baba-zada, a Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) student, says that digitalisation is changing people’s lives by making them simpler, and companies’ operations by increasing business efficiency and improving customer experiences.

“I think the best thing I remember about KTU is the community and the number of amazing people I met who became a great part of my life,” says Amina Dautova from Kazakhstan, a graduate of architecture master’s programme at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). After achieving a bachelor’s degree in Malaysia, Amina decided to continue architecture studies in Europe to gain new perspectives.

Every year, Formula Student East, organised by the Association of Automotive Engineers, takes place in Europe. This competition serves as a platform for engineering students to deepen their expertise. Inspired by this prestigious event, Martin Gomez, an Ecuadorian student studying Intelligent Robotics Systems at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) founded Formula Student Lithuania – a dynamic racing team qualified to compete in the race. Recently, it gained formal recognition as an official KTU student organisation.

100 grants from the Lithuanian State (monthly scholarships and grants covering the tuition) will be awarded to the full-time master’s applicants from selected countries. Choose a study programme and apply for the scholarship by May 6, 2024.

“Now that I have finally decided to move and live here, I’m not sure if it is what I expected, but it is something that I enjoy,” says Luisina Allevato, a student from Argentina studying New Media Language at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). “The one thing that Lithuania and Honduras have in common is that most people don’t know where either of those countries is,” says Wendy Giovanna Andino Villalta from Honduras. A third-year student of mechatronics at Kaunas University of Technology. Living more than 10 thousand kilometres away from home, she believes that pursuing dreams requires sacrifice, but the rewards are worth the challenge.

“I wanted to finally study something that is relevant to me and that I actually enjoy,” says Mahdjouba Kettab from France, studying master’s in Public Policy and Security at KTU. Mainly studying online, Mahdjouba visited KTU just a couple of times. From Kaunas, she brought home a passion for herbal tea, new friendships, and an experience of living in a different part of Europe. The future crisis management expert says that she will come back.

“I have always been interested in the connection between food and health, and how what we eat can impact our bodies and wellbeing,” says Narmin Babayeva from Azerbaijan, studying Food Science and Nutrition at KTU. While hard-working and focused, Narmin always makes sure that she has time to pursue her hobbies, as they are very important for her overall happiness.

“It felt as if life didn’t offer me enough challenges, that is why I chose to go to the Netherlands,” says Urtė Mackevičiūtė, a Communication Studies and Information Management Technologies student from the Kaunas University of Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. In 2023, the autumn semester she spent at the University of Twente.

“I clearly remember the day I arrived here – I was so excited about all the experiences I was about to have, that I remember going out in the freezing cold wearing just a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a casual jacket,” says Martin Xavier Gomez Salazar from Ecuador. A third-year KTU Intelligent Robotics Systems student says that he has learned to love Lithuania “to its fullest”.

“KTU made me steer my career in the solar energy direction,” says Murad Najafov from Azerbaijan, a country with abundant natural resources and a highly developed petroleum industry. At the moment, Murad, studying chemical engineering master’s at Kaunas University of Technology, is already on his third internship abroad and says that he has no time to miss home.

The extremely fast-changing construction sector, influenced by the Internet of Things, building information modelling and digital twins, and other innovations, forces business enterprises and the academic community to constantly improve. Effective application of these new technologies can increase the efficiency of the construction sector, reduce energy consumption in buildings, and ultimately create smart building systems that learn from past data.

Studying abroad is a huge step in every young person’s life. Stepping out of your comfort zone is not always easy, but it is an invaluable experience that provides so many international opportunities. “The wide world is waiting for me,” says Marharyta Strakhova, a Ukrainian Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) student, who went on an Erasmus+ study exchange to Spain and is convinced that this is just the beginning.

A team of ECIU University students, including a KTU student, have completed an outstanding challenge – they have created a plan to help reduce the carbon footprint (CO2) for a Lithuanian company. The results of the sustainability plan for Scania Lithuania can be used to reduce CO2 emissions for other companies and organisations in the country.

For the fifth time, Lithuanian National Broadcaster, LRT has invited us to remember the most outstanding events, personalities, initiatives, and achievements of the year 2022, which inspired us all and helped Lithuania to grow and improve. Meda Surdokaitė, a Kaunas University of Technology GIFTed Talent Academy student has won in a Future of the Year category. As stated in the LRT press release, Surdokaitė became “Future of the Year” for her achievements in the EU Young Scientists competition.

The closest family members around the table, festive treats, a twinkling Christmas tree decorated with garlands and shining toys, Christmas tunes playing in the background – this is probably what Christmas looks like in most parts of the world. Many will agree that the true meaning of Christmas is to share joy and warmth with loved ones. However, different countries have different traditions for the festive period.

In the Global Online Marketing Academic Challenge (GOMAC 2022), the team students of the KTU School of Economics and Business, the Marketing study programme were recognized as the winners of the European region. The campaign of another team from KTU entered the final.

Azad Ismayilov, a KTU industrial engineering and management student from Azerbaijan, already has two internships in international companies, several scholarships and a bachelor’s in aviation engineering under his belt. “Sometimes it’s about working smarter rather than hard,” smiles Azad, currently a technical records specialist in an international aviation company.

KTU’s system of renewable energy resources, which received international recognition in 2020, attracted the attention of the Commission for Energy and Sustainable Development of the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) this year. During their visit to KTU, the MPs got acquainted with the hybrid electricity production and heat storage system operating at the University, which not only protects the environment but also supplies the buildings on the campus.

Earlier this week, an exhibition dedicated to celebrating Kazakhstan as a nuclear-free state was opened at the KTU Student Infocentre. The exhibition will run until the end of next week.

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) applied chemistry student Meda Surdokaitė won the first prize at the European Union Young Scientists Competition in the Netherlands on Saturday. The news was released by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, and published by lrt.lt.

Colombian Gerson David Pinto Chica came to Kaunas from Kibaha in Tanzania, where his family currently lives. He admits that moving across continents at a young age had made him rather robust and open to change. “I had to learn English, and Swahili and adapt to a different culture, but it was useful as now I don’t feel lonely when I travel”, says Gerson, currently studying mechatronics at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

In recent years Alzheimer’s disease has been on the rise throughout the world and is rarely diagnosed at an early stage when it can still be effectively controlled. Using artificial intelligence, KTU researchers conducted a study to identify whether human-computer interfaces could be adapted for people with memory impairments to recognise a visible object in front of them.

When she was 17, Alejandra Gutierrez Luna travelled half the world from South America to Africa to live. There, at a university in Zambia, she started studying medicine. However, five years into her studies, the girl decided to pursue her real passion and moved to Lithuania, to study… architecture. “Architecture offered more than just art studies – it is everything I always wanted to study and do for a living”, says Alejandra, a sophomore student of architecture at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

ECIU University Days 2022 was the first on-site post-pandemic cycle of events of ECIU University where students and the community could learn more about ECIU University activities. The participants could try challenge-based learning (CBL) in a workshop and listen to the experiences of working in international teams.

On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) THE Impacts Rankings 2022 were announced. For the first time, KTU was included in these rankings by the international university rating agency Times Higher Education, which ranks the world universities’ actions directed towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At the very heart of Kaunas University of Technology Student Campus, a new contemporary Student Information Centre was opened earlier this month. The refurbished contemporary info point is a place to contact for any questions you may have about the student services provided by the university.

“I look at my future in Lithuania with bright eyes,” says Carlos Sosa Henríquez from Gran Canaria, studying aeronautical engineering master’s at Kaunas University of Technology. From his young years, Carlos was interested in “how these large things can fly”. After graduating with his first degree at home, he chose KTU in Lithuania, a country where the aeronautical engineering sector is rapidly growing.

“There are two types of people: peach and coconut. Peach people are soft, very friendly, and talkative outside but very reserved inside. Coconut people have a shell that is hard to crack, but once you crack that shell, they are very warm and nice. I grew up in Turkish culture, in which people are mostly peach type. Lithuanians, on the other hand, are coconut,” says Eylul Guleryuz, studying Informatics at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

“In Kaunas, I have made a step forward into an independent adult life,” says Narmin Mammadova from Azerbaijan. Currently studying Public Governance at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Narmin decided to transfer to the Kaunas University of Technology after spending here one semester as an exchange student. She says that this decision utterly transformed her life.

In March 2022, a new location emerged on the cultural map of Kaunas – KTU opened a new multifunctional Campus Library, which will be available to the public. A contemporary study place is located in the Kaunas University of Technology campus, next to the main building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

“Every time I write a line of code, I feel that I have created a piece of art. It is my way of self-expression,” says Mahammad Ismayilov, a sophomore student of informatics at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). Although his first year of studies was challenging due to pandemics, now Mahammad is enjoying student life to the full.

Lithuanian researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) improved an algorithm that detects Alzheimer’s disease from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. The new model achieved over 98 per cent accuracy on a test dataset in detecting the neurodegenerative disease by improving a neural network model.

“It is very challenging to focus on studies while war is waging in my country,” says Yusef Savid from Ukraine, studying master’s in Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). Yusef chose computer science after graduating from mechatronics at KTU and says that studying IT is much more fun.

The coronavirus pandemic that suddenly hit the world a couple of years ago affected many aspects of life in Lithuania, including education. In just a couple of weeks, all Lithuanian educational institutions had to switch from contact to distance learning, using the latest technologies. Since then, technologies became inseparable from the educational process.

In the near future, the physicians will be able to monitor the patients at their homes using virtual reality tools, computer scientists are convinced. A team of researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania, proposed a deep-learning-based method for the three-dimensional human shape reconstruction when the original figure is only partly visible. The main advantage of the method is its relatively low cost, high compression of the images obtained and easy integration with the existing virtual reality tools. The method was developed using a real-world dataset, the clinical trial is pending.

A group of chemists from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania synthesised materials that were used for constructing a record-breaking perovskite solar module, with an efficiency of 21.4 per cent. This was achieved through the passivation of the active solar cell layer, which increases the efficiency of the cell and significantly improves its stability.

Kiran’s proactive attitude paid off more than once. After the above-mentioned correspondence, he landed a job in a Polish company where he developed a product that was labelled Top Innovation at the annual global food and beverage fair Anuga 2021.

“Once you become a part of a close community, you understand even the jokes,” says Nóra Emilia Nagybákay from Hungary, who has been living in Kaunas for more than two years. A chemical engineering PhD student at KTU, says that being a researcher is both challenging and fun – you fail many times before finally succeeding, and then, you still need to work hard to make sense of data! The new system would connect restaurants and households on one side of Lithuania with recycling companies on the other via the app. Based on current resources, the application should be launched in 2022.

Although contemporary women are urged to fight against the stereotypes defining the IT field as exclusively masculine, the number of girls choosing IT studies and pursuing careers in this field is still low. According to Agnė Paulauskaitė-Tarasevičienė, the Head of KTU Artificial Intelligence Centre, the situation would change if the girls were introduced to technologies at an early age.

On Wednesday, May 12, the annual rankings of Lithuanian higher education institutions and colleges organised by the magazine “Reitingai” (Eng. Rankings) were published. “Lithuania is a great country, it is good to live in Europe, where you can find a job in an international company with the motivating working environment”, says Kamoliddin Mirzoev, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) student of informatics. This summer Kamoliddin spent working as an intern at Nasdaq’s Technology and Business Support Competence Centre in Vilnius. This was not the first internship for the KTU student from Tajikistan.

Several Chinese students from a primary school from Shen Zhen chose to study and learn something new during their summer holidays, and came to Kaunas University of Technology for two weeks from 20 July to 8 August 2016. The children participated at KTU-based Summer Camp, which was organised by partnering organisations from Lithuania and China.
Next summer camp is foreseen in July-August 2017.

Celebration of the New Academic Year.

In the near future one of the buildings housing the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEF) at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) shall be turned into a modern laboratory of renewable energy sources. The roof of the building located at the KTU campus is about to be fitted with 1,520 units of photovoltaic modules while the modern underground geothermic energy system will be used for fulfilling the building’s heating requirements.

Those who start studies of BSc Aviation Engineering or Mechanical Engineering at KTU will be able to benefit from an innovative internship model: the students will be able to choose 2 semesters dedicated for placements only.

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Santaka Valley hosted semi-finals of the international competition of startups from energy field KICkoff. The winners of KICkoff Lithuania – two teams from KTU – compete to win 10 000 euros in the finals in Warsaw in September.

Start-up SearchNode born and developed at Startup Space of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is named as the most ambitious Lithuanian start-up, according to the global business website Forbes. There are two more enterprises created by KTU graduates among the listed most ambitious Lithuanian start-ups. “We are proud to be reading about Lithuanian start-ups in global media. This means that we are equal players in the game”, says Donatas Smailys, Head of KTU’s start-up incubator Startup Space.

Solid foundation for Lithuanian aviation industry breakthrough has been laid in Kaunas’ region – the first in Europe cluster of aeronautical engineering companies and educational institutions is being created. After the airport is connected to the free economic zone and with a constant staff supply of qualified aviation engineers prepared at local university, Kaunas will be capable of accepting for service the great transatlantic aircrafts with repair value from several hundred thousand to several million euros.

The first smart electric car charging station SmartChargeBox was opened at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Santaka Valley. The device created in Kaunas has already attracted attention from investors working in international market.

Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania takes pleasure in offering Lithuanian state scholarships for full-time Master degree studies for the whole study period for nationals of Republic of Belarus, Republic of Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Ukraine, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Uzbekistan and People’s Republic of China as well as foreigners of Lithuanian origin to study in Lithuanian higher education institutions:
1. A monthly scholarship of 380 EUR and benefit to cover the study fee is offered for the nationals of Republic of Ukraine (40 grants altogether);
2. A monthly scholarship of 380 EUR and benefit to cover the study fee is offered for the nationals of Republic of Belarus, Republic of Georgia, Republic of Moldova, and foreign citizens of Lithuanian origin (other than citizens of the European Union member states, European Economic Area member states);
3. A monthly scholarship of 380 EUR is offered for the nationals of Republic of Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Uzbekistan and People’s Republic of China (12 grants altogether).

On May 4 2016 Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) launched the first Fab Lab engineering workshop in Lithuania. The total investment into the modern Fabrication Laboratory infrastructure already exceeds half a million Euros.

On 2015 April 27th the agreement on mutual recognition of higher education was signed between Lithuania and China during the ASEM Education Ministers Meeting which is an important platform for international cooperation in education between Asia and Europe. For assisting international students to deal with these issues and to integrate more easily into the University’s social and academic life, Department of International Relations at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU DIR) is organising series of events on different topics.

More than 250 engineers, software developers, designers, marketers and business developers were competing at the Hacker Games hackathon at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Santaka Valley last weekend. It was the first Hacker Games hackathon with a designated hardware track and the largest event of a kind in Lithuania over the past few years.

At the Make in India Week in Mumbai and celebrating the 98th anniversary of its independence, Lithuania presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a unique gift: a specially published small Sanskrit-Lithuanian dictionary.
